Grasshoppers, Greatness, and God's Kingdom

DAY 5 OF 6

Doubting from a Dungeon

In a surprising turn of events, John finds himself in prison for calling out the wickedness of a political ruler. However, he not only is limited by the confines of his prison cell, but also the confines of his faith. John wrestles with doubts about Jesus’ identity as the Messiah. It’s very possible that John, like many other Jewish people at this time, was perplexed by the expectation-shattering nature of Jesus’ life and ministry. He didn’t live or teach the way they expected the Messiah to live and teach. Nevertheless, Jesus doesn’t scold John for his doubts. Instead, gentle Jesus cares for his concerned cousin and assures him that he is the long-waited Messiah, the Savior of the world. Then, after addressing John’s doubts, he affirms John’s greatness! In doing so, Jesus shows us that greatness isn’t dependent on our doubts. It’s all about submission to our Savior.

Reflection:

  • When is it most difficult for you to trust that Jesus is who he says he is? (Verses 2-3)
  • How does Jesus’ response to John’s doubting encourage or challenge you?
  • How do you think Jesus defines greatness? (Verse 11)
