7 Days of Prayer to Prepare for MarriageSample

7 Days of Prayer to Prepare for Marriage

DAY 5 OF 7

This is one of the most important days of prayer in this book. Every day’s trait and prayer is important, but this one might be the most foundational. I’ve stopped to pray for you several times because I so badly want you to build your life and your marriage on the right foundation. The world will try to pull you in so many different directions. But my hope is that you and your significant other will dig down deep and build your lives on the solid-rock foundation of Jesus Christ.

The one guarantee we see in Luke 6:46–49 is that storms will come in our lives. Whether it’s financial hardships, difficult in-laws, job issues, infertility, a pornography struggle, or something else, you will face challenges as a married couple. The question is how you’ll respond when the storms hit. Will your life stand firm like the house built on the rock in verse 48, or crash down like the house built on sand in verse 49?

What does it look like to have a biblical marriage?

A biblical marriage seeks counsel from God’s Word. Both husband and wife are students of the Bible.

A biblical marriage obeys God’s Word. Both spouses know what God’s Word says and do what it says.

A biblical marriage seeks counsel. The husband and wife go to other faithful followers of Jesus when they are stuck and need counsel. This could be a trusted friend, pastor, or biblical counselor or therapist.

A biblical marriage is based on truth. Spouses consistently remind themselves of biblical truth and fight back together against culture’s picture and definition of marriage.

A biblical marriage is Christ-honoring. Each spouse takes consistent steps to become more and more like Jesus Christ.

In short, I hope you continue to build your life and marriage on Jesus Christ. Yes, troubles will come into your life, but the home—and marriage—that is built on a deep, solid foundation will stand through all trials that may come your way.

Lord, there are often days when we don’t want to do the hard work to become like You. We’d rather watch TV than read our Bibles. We’d rather sleep in on a Sunday morning. And we’d rather keep our money for ourselves. But what we really want is a biblical marriage. Help us to become the godly husband and wife You want us to be. Please help us to be more dependent on You than on anything or anyone else so that we may build our marriage on Your strong foundation.
