BOLD PURSUIT

DAY 4 OF 5

Many different circumstances in life threaten to steal our hope and joy. It could be a major, life-changing loss, diagnosis, or tragedy. Or it could be several smaller “thieves”—the daily grind of life, dissatisfaction in our job or a relationship, loneliness, financial strain, periodic struggles with depression or anxiety—that gradually take away little pieces of our optimism and well-being, until we’re left with next to nothing. Even for reborn believers, the resulting sense of hopelessness can sometimes seem like too much to bear.

Paul said, “No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). We can overcome hope-robbing situations because we don’t live by our feelings; we live by the truth and promises of God. We may be tempted to lose hope, but God will not allow us to be pushed that far. Real hope from God is the assurance that He will keep His promises.

When we struggle with feelings of hopelessness, we must look up. It’s tempting to keep our eyes focused on the causes of our hopelessness. But Psalm 121:1–2 says, “I will raise my eyes to the mountains; from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Instead of looking at the obstacles that block hope in our lives, we must look to the One who can clear away the obstacles. No problem, setback, or tragedy on earth is bigger than the Lord who made heaven and earth.

The trap we fall into is trying to deal with hopelessness based on our own understanding of it. Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

When we live by what we see and not by faith, we can see and feel the things that rob us of our hope, but we can’t always see or feel God’s work of resupplying us with hope. We must trust Him and have faith in His unseen work.

Prayer

Lord, You are my source of hope, peace, and comfort. I am so thankful for all that You’ve done for me, especially when I’ve faced fear and uncertainty. Thank You for working in my life. Amen.
