DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: The Fear of the Lord

A friend had trouble lighting her outdoor grill for the first time, so she leaned in close to see what was wrong. Suddenly, flames shot forth, singeing her eyebrows, bangs, and arm hair. She hadn’t properly feared the consequences of mistreating the grill.

Likewise, many people don’t properly fear the consequences of mistreating the Lord.

On Day 1 we read that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). Proverbs 15:33 tells us further that “wisdom’s instruction is to fear the LORD.” But what is this fear of the LORD?

Fear is what we feel when we face potential threats that are greater and more powerful than us. People who fear the Lord respect His great power and authority and, therefore, make every effort to obey Him.

Why Fear the Lord?

Proverbs gives us many reasons to fear the Lord. It says it’s wise because God is Creator of all, and that makes us accountable to Him. He will judge us for how we treat each other, not by our own standards but by His. Additionally, He sees into our inmost being. We may hide wrongdoing from people and ourselves, but not from the eyes of the LORD.

The book also gives positive reasons for fearing the Lord. It tells us the Lord is completely trustworthy and fearing Him brings blessings. For example, those who fear the Lord not only have a strong confidence that God will protect them but also supply a refuge for their children. The Lord blesses them with riches, honor, and life—enough riches to provide for their family and the needy. While earth’s riches offer benefits, Proverbs tells us they pale in comparison with the spiritual riches that come from fearing the Lord, such as atonement for sin and avoiding evil.

_____

As you read today’s proverbs, ponder what motivates you most to fear the Lord. Give thanks for the blessings that come to those who fear the Lord.
