 <div class="p">1You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?#3:3 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit. 4Have you experienced#3:4 Or suffered so much in vain&#8212;if it really was in vain? 5So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6So also Abraham &#8220;believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.&#8221;#3:6 Gen. 15:6</div><div class="p"> 7Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: &#8220;All nations will be blessed through you.&#8221;#3:8 Gen. 12:3; 18:18; 22:18 9So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.</div><div class="p"> 10For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: &#8220;Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.&#8221;#3:10 Deut. 27:26 11Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because &#8220;the righteous will live by faith.&#8221;#3:11 Hab. 2:4 12The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, &#8220;The person who does these things will live by them.&#8221;#3:12 Lev. 18:5 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: &#8220;Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.&#8221;#3:13 Deut. 21:23 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.</div>

 <div class="label">15</div><div class="s1">The Lord&#8217;s Covenant With Abram</div><div class="p"> 1After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Do not be afraid, Abram.</div><div class="q2">I am your shield,#15:1 Or sovereign</div><div class="q2">your very great reward.#15:1 Or shield; / your reward will be very great&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 2But Abram said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit#15:2 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain. my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?&#8221; 3And Abram said, &#8220;You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then the word of the Lord came to him: &#8220;This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.&#8221; 5He took him outside and said, &#8220;Look up at the sky and count the stars&#8212;if indeed you can count them.&#8221; Then he said to him, &#8220;So shall your offspring#15:5 Or seed be.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.</div><div class="p"> 7He also said to him, &#8220;I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8But Abram said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9So the Lord said to him, &#8220;Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.</div><div class="p"> 12As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13Then the Lord said to him, &#8220;Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, &#8220;To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi#15:18 Or river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates&#8212; 19the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.&#8221;</div>

If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 57&#8220;You are not yet fifty years old,&#8221; they said to him, &#8220;and you have seen Abraham!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 58 &#8220;Very truly I tell you,&#8221; Jesus answered, &#8220;before Abraham was born, I am!&#8221; 59At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.</div>
