Raising Spiritually Healthy Children

DAY 7 OF 8

It’s Not Fair!

“It’s not fair!” every child either mutters or hollers at some point in their life (or several times a day!). And all the parents collectively respond, “Well, life is not fair!” Especially as a parent dealing with promotions, moves, and trainings, an unfair issue rears up over and over because life is not fair.

Sometimes, that is a good thing. If we always got what we deserved, we would all be constantly punished for our selfishness, ultimately culminating in eternal separation from God.

But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.
Romans 5:8 (CEV)

We don’t deserve any of God’s goodness—which is where all goodness comes from. God loves us and was giving and forgiving enough to unfairly sacrifice his perfect Son instead of punishing us. Any good we receive is an unmerited gift.

So, when your child complains about unfairness, you can use the moment to teach them about God’s grace.

  • Help them understand that their need for justice is placed in them by their Creator, who is always just.
  • Explain to them it is good we don’t get what we deserve as inherently selfish beings.
  • Remind them continually how wonderful Jesus’s gift of forgiveness is.
  • Assure God has them on the path that is best for them, even when they don’t understand how it could be good.
  • Help them to accept the unfair situation with humility and as an opportunity to serve others.
  • And finally, discuss how the Lord wants us to work towards justice for others. Look for ways you can be part of God’s plan to bring justice where it is needed.

PRAY

Lord, this life is often unfair, but it’s nothing compared to the unfair treatment you endured that led you to the cross. Help me to rise above my hurt and frustration and look to you. May I be your catalyst for bringing justice to the oppressed. Amen.

TIME TO TALK

Conversation starter for kids: Provides you with questions and prompts to facilitate a time of applicable discussion with children to lead them towards knowing God and His Word more deeply.

Question(s): What things seem unfair in this world to you? What do you think God wants us to do about them?

Apply: Think of an underprivileged part of the world that interests your child. Research with them the challenges of the area and the groups that are working there. Come up with how your child can help, such as a lemonade stand or selling some of their toys. Don’t force it, but encourage them and follow the Spirit’s moving in the child’s heart.
