DAY 4 OF 4

Most of us know what an inheritance is. An inheritance is a financial term describing the assets passed down to individuals after someone dies. An inheritance could include cash, investments, or other items of value (like jewelry, cars, and antiques). Sometimes people even inherit homes. Regardless of the item, the perk of an inheritance is that it can provide a sense of security you would have never had without it.

So, what do those in the Kingdom of God inherit? As followers of Jesus, our inheritance is the hope of eternity: our home. 1 Peter 1:3-5 tells us all about this priceless inheritance that most of us get super excited reading about until we get to verse six:

“So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.”

Sometimes people make the life-changing decision to receive salvation and bring in this expectation that their lives will be trouble-free now that they are following Jesus. Still, Jesus never promised us that following Him would exempt us from trials. Jesus promises us that we will experience hardships in this life, but that we ought to take heart because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). As you read about the life of Jesus in the Gospels, it is clear that even Jesus suffered many hardships. To follow Jesus also means to share in His sufferings, but we have hope that our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that God will reveal to us later (Romans 8:15-18).

When we face hardships of any kind, we must continually remind ourselves that this world is not our home.

“But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior” (Philippians 3:20).

Through each and every season, we must fix our eyes on Jesus and the eternal life He has set before us. Our inheritance as citizens of Heaven – as people in the Kingdom of God – is the hope of eternity. His Kingdom has come, and soon our King Jesus will return to bring us home.
