Ten Massive Leadership Questions

DAY 6 OF 10

What is my model?

This may be an odd question for a devotional, but since this is a leadership devotional, the question is relevant. As leaders, we need models because followers need models. Models are the way things get done systematized. Jesus had a clear ministry and leadership model. He ministered in the masses, taught the crowds, mobilized the seventy-two, did life with His twelve disciples, and even more closely mentored three of them: Peter, James, and John. That was His ministry model. He did not try to be everything for everyone and do everything for everyone but invested very specifically in very specific people to expand the ministry footprint and pass on the baton. The same is true of the apostle Paul. He had a model. He went to strategic cities, planted churches, raised and appointed local leadership, and moved on but stayed involved in an advisory capacity.

We need models because it gives everyone a roadmap of what to do to get it done and what needs to be done. It helps with the “how” of achieving our mission. If it sounds too abstract, think about how the small groups in your church function (or if you are part of a small church, how it functions). Or think of a church service. What are the typical elements and sequences? If it is roughly standardized, those are models. Another major benefit of a model is that it is transferable. If you have a working model, it is easy to train others in that model and multiply the ministry effect. They can also reproduce the model in others, etc., thus: multiplication!

You are probably using models whether you are aware of it or not. But it helps if we give it some conscious thought. It also helps if we actually transfer the knowledge and understanding of our model to our followers. Then the effect can multiply! Not all models are created equal. A good model is one that fits your situation and context and serves the mission. The best models are inspired by the Holy Spirit and are founded on Biblical principles. May the Holy Spirit give you insight when you pray over the ministry and leadership models you use.
