Becoming Like a Child

DAY 4 OF 14

Humility

“Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4)

To understand Jesus' statement in Matthew 18:4, it is good to go back a few verses. Jesus' disciples came to Him with a burning question, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” This was not the only time they discussed this question. Apparently, it was quite an important topic for them. In Luke 22, disagreement arose among the disciples because they all wanted to be the most important. They all wanted the best place in the kingdom of heaven. Surely, as Jesus' closest disciples, they had earned a special position! And which of them was the most special? Who was most entitled to a place of honor?

Jesus does not answer their question, but approaches the subject differently. He Himself, the Son of God, has not come to earth to be considered important, but to serve. He washes the feet of His disciples. He is humble in heart, although He is the supreme Lord and worthy of all honor. Jesus' disciples should follow His example, regardless of their social position. We, too, as contemporary followers of the Lord Jesus, must all be willing to be the least and serve one another.

Are you willing to take such a humble place? What does that look like in your daily life?
