Finding the Light in Self-Harm

DAY 2 OF 7

DAY 2

WHO YOU REALLY ARE

Thank you for being with me today. I know yesterday was probably overwhelming as you faced understanding the pain behind your self-harming behaviors.

As we left our session yesterday, I asked you to understand why you engage in self-harming behaviors and what it is you temporarily feel relieved from as a result of the behaviors.

I would assume that if you understood these two questions, you probably faced emotional pain. Perhaps it drew up past events that you have tried to forget. I know it can be hard. As we work our way through the spiritual healing process in these studies, remember to reach out to the medical and mental health professionals so that you surround yourself with a team that can help you heal. These studies are just part of the healing process.

Moving forward to our studies today, we will look at who we really are. As noted yesterday, with self-harming behaviors, it is typical to have a negative self-image. The truth is, there is nothing negative about our image. We were fearfully and wonderfully made as God knit us in our mother's womb (Psalm 139:13-14).

Remember, in the creation story, God made everything. As He made everything, each day He ended, He saw it was good (Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25).

It wasn’t until God made humans, both male and female, that God saw it was very good (Genesis 1:31). We are His most prized possessions.

Jesus explained to His disciples that God has even numbered the hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:30).

You see, you were perfectly made! God did not make any mistakes, and He loves you so deeply that He takes care of all your needs as long as you seek Him (Luke 12:22-31).

Before moving into tomorrow together, I need you to realize all the pain that has evolved into self-harming behaviors is lies. The truth about who you are is described over and over again in Scripture.

This is who you really are:

Beautiful (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
Victorious (Romans 8:37)
Enough (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Created (Genesis 1:31)
Strong (Philippians 4:13)
Amazing (Psalm 139:14)
Capable (Mark 10:27)
Chosen (1 Thessalonians 1:4)
Never Alone (Matthew 28:20)
Always Loved (Romans 8:39)

I’ll see you tomorrow as we learn about ourstrengthsh.
