DAY 9 OF 10

Day 9: Lights in Darkness

. . . Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:16 ESV).

Timothy’s study took about three months. He examined scriptures also on humility, loyalty, and courage.

My risk level is about to rise, he thought anxiously. There isn’t much risk in learning, but there may be a lot of risk in doing.

Timothy was nervous as the next regular board meeting began. He reported on his quest. “Gentlemen,” he began. “One of the things I appreciate about our board meetings is the respectful candor of our conversations. Several months ago, Ray’s frank comments got me going on a journey that I want to share with you. You did a truly valuable service, Ray. It will make a difference in our ministry, and I thank you.”

“Thank you, Pastor,” Ray replied. “I really appreciate hearing that.”

Timothy outlined his 12-week study of agape love, the spectrum of love, and the character values seen and called for throughout the scriptures.

“Where are we heading with this conversation?” asked Henry, another board member.

“I don’t know all the implications,” replied Jim, the chairman, “but God’s process is clear: His light shines into our hearts, and it shines out of us in a spectrum of love. Each color in that spectrum is a Christlike character value. Others will see His love in our actions, reactions, and choices. And they will not make celebrities of us; they will celebrate Him!

When you think about it, this is a huge mandate,” he concluded, “but this is what all God’s children are called to be and do. How can we not walk in a manner worthy of our calling?”

Being a Light in the Night

  1. What’s the risk in living a life of Christlike character?
  2. What adjustments in your ministry of leading or discipling will increase your influence as you model, teach, and encourage Christlike character in others?

Read what Jesus said about being a light in dark places: Matthew 5:14–16 and 5:43–48.

Key verse: Matthew 5:16.

Prayer: Almighty God, please help me understand the times and know what to do.
