DAY 2 OF 10

Follow Jesus.

By Rev. Roger E. Woller

How many decisions have you made in the past hour, day, week, month, and year? I don’t think we can even count the decisions we have made or will have to make in our lifetimes. Some of our past decisions were life or death. We made decisions that could result in eternal life in heaven or eternal death in hell.

That is some serious decision-making, isn’t it? The person referred to in our text from Hebrews had to make an eternal life or eternal death decision. It wasn’t an easy decision to make.

What about you? Are you going to follow Jesus or your sinful nature?

The writer of Hebrews is referring to Moses when he says, “He chose to be mistreated with God’s people rather than enjoy sin for a little while.”

Moses had it made. He had everything you could ask for in this world. All he had to do was to continue to live like an Egyptian, worship the Egyptian gods, treat the people of Hebrews like possessions and slaves, and continue to gather earthly wealth at the expense of others.

Why should he give all of that up to live like a poor person and be mistreated? Because it was the God-pleasing thing to do. The Egyptians’ gods were not real. The riches of this world are just that—they are of this world, so they do not last. The material things of this world cannot save your soul.

Moses learned who the true God is from his mother, who nursed him after the Egyptian princess found him floating in a basket in the River Nile. After he left the Egyptians, the Savior God spoke to him from a burning bush. God told him, “I AM WHO I AM.”

Only with God’s help can we make the right decisions.

Prayer: We are always in need of your help to make God decisions that please you. Help us to answer you by saying, “We will serve the Lord our God, and we will listen to his voice.” Amen.
