Relationship Lessons From Leah and Rachel's Family LifeSample

Relationship Lessons From Leah and Rachel's Family Life

DAY 1 OF 5

When Rachel saw that she conceived no children for Jacob, she envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I will die.” Then Jacob became furious with Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has denied you children?” She said, “Here, take my maid Bilhah and go in to her; and [when the baby comes] she shall [a]deliver it [while sitting] on my knees, so that by her I may also have children [to count as my own].” Genesis 30:1-3 (AMP)

Rachel looked to her husband to do what only the Almighty God could do for her. Her unrealistic expectation caused unnecessary friction in her marriage.

In marriage, unforgiveness, frustration, resentment, or bitterness is inevitable when your spouse becomes an idol, you place unrealistic expectations on your spouse, or expect your spouse to fill a place in your heart only God can fill. We are most miserable when we look to humans to fulfill what only God can do for us.

Whatever you need, the Almighty God can provide. God can use your spouse or anyone as a channel to meet some of your needs. Yet, your eyes must be fixed on God, not humans, to make things happen for you.

Take a moment and reflect on what you currently expect from your spouse, loved ones, or anyone in your life. Write your expectations and find scriptures addressing those issues.

God created your spouse and anyone you depend on to fulfill anything on your list. Consequently, only God can help them fulfill your expectations. Your spouse can become the godly man or woman you desire through God’s empowerment. God can give you favor and wisdom to meet your needs. You only need to get God involved.
