What Is Sin?Sample

What Is Sin?

DAY 9 OF 12

“We know that our old life was put to death on the cross with Christ. This happened so that our sinful selves would have no power over us. Then we would not be slaves to sin.” (Romans 6:6, ERV)

God wants to set us free from the power of sin.

We humans are enslaved to sin. We can’t set ourselves free from its power or from its consequences. Satan, who first tempted us into sin, has a firm grip on us. But God does not leave us in this hopeless condition!

In the very first conversation after Adam and Eve had sinned, the Lord promised that their offspring would bruise Satan’s head, and Satan would bruise his heel (Genesis 3:15). Further on in the Bible, we learn that this offspring is Jesus. He has come to disarm Satan and to set people free from sin, even though this cost Him His life. Romans 6:10 (ERV) summarizes: “When Christ died, He died to defeat the power of sin one time—enough for all time”.

The Bible uses radical words to explain how we can become free from the dominion of sin. It says that our old sinful self, also called our ‘old life’, needs to be crucified with Jesus. It needs to die. Only then can we receive a new life, free from sin. For the rest of our earthly life, there will be a struggle to live holy and righteously and to not let sin control our life anymore. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit, is it possible to live a life of righteousness that honors God.

Have you been set free by Jesus Christ?
