God-Winks

I’d forgotten my headphones again and, in a flurry of frustration and impending deadlines, I grabbed the office keys and my phone and announced I was going across the road to buy some headphones. I had a ton of work to get through and knew that if I couldn’t lock in and focus by blocking the world out, then I was going to struggle to finish it. I frantically paced the aisles, ducking and weaving amongst annoyingly slow shoppers who clearly had time to lazily peruse the shelves. What an inconvenience! Didn’t they know I needed to… found them!

Grabbing the cheapest pair I could find, I scurried towards the door, throwing a sideways glance at the plant pots as I rushed past. One particular pot halted me in my hurry. It was a pot that was decorated to look like a ladybug. A smile crept across my face as I pulled out my phone and took a picture, choosing to pause for a minute while I re-centered myself. I’d just had a God wink.

Amid deadlines, our busy schedules, and commitments, we can become so self-focused on what we need to achieve or do; or we can become blind to the people and the world around us. God-winks, as I like to call them, are moments where Jesus reaches into our world to gently rebuke us in our hurry and remind us of what is important. That He sees us and knows our needs. That He is present with us, and that these little winks are reminding us to be present with Him. That is what ladybugs are for me. A connection point back to Jesus.
