Ever Wonder Why?

DAY 6 OF 7

Ever Wonder Why God Loves You?

Have you ever found it difficult to accept God’s love for you? Sometimes we know God loves us, but it’s easy to wonder why He would. We know all the ways we’ve messed up and missed the mark, so why would a perfect and holy God still choose to love sinful, imperfect humans like us?

It’s another big question, but God’s love has little or nothing to do with us. And knowing that is really good news because it also means that God’s love is not dependent on our goodness, our behavior, or anything we do or don’t do.

So, why would God love us? While there’s no way we’ll completely know on this side of heaven, Scripture does offer us several potential reasons why. Here are just a few:

1. Love isn’t just something God does; love is who He is. In 1 John, we discover that love isn’t just a part of God. We realize that God is love. Any idea that we have of real love comes from God, who is the origin and picture of love itself. So God loves us because love is a core part of His identity.

2. God loves us because He made us and stamped His image on us. God is our Creator, so He has an in-depth understanding of why He made us, the purpose He gave us, and the potential inside of us. And not only did He make us but He also stamped His image on us, calling us very good. So it makes sense that God loves and cares for His creation.

3. God decided in advance to adopt us as His children. God showed His love for us by sending Jesus to die for our sins before we ever knew anything about Him. And Scripture tells us that from the beginning, God knew He would adopt us as His children through Jesus. When we turn to Jesus, we become children of God—His family is founded through undeserved love and grace.

There are likely many other reasons why God chooses to love us, but the amazing news is that because love is who He is, and because God never changes, we know that His love for us will never go away.

God’s love is not dependent on us—it’s completely related to who He is. Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Nothing you do can ever make God love you more than He already does right now, in this moment. And nothing you do can ever make Him love you less than He does right now, in this moment.

So if you’re struggling to receive God’s love, remember that it’s not about you. It’s about the God who created you in His image, as His child. And knowing that builds our faith, reminds us of God’s character, and helps us accept His unconditional, never-changing love.

Pray: God, thank You for creating us in Your image and calling us good. Even while we were still sinners, You showed Your great love for us by sending Jesus for us, and I’m forever grateful for that gift. Thank You for adopting me into Your family through Jesus. Help me to fully receive Your love and extend it to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge: Make a list of Scriptures that remind you of God’s love for you. On days when it’s hard for you to receive it, go back to that list and remind your feelings about the truth of God’s Word.
