Embrace the Race: Persevering Through Challenging Times

DAY 11 OF 28

God's Timing is Perfect

Sometimes I have a hard time falling asleep, especially if I have a lot on my mind. I'll often ask my spouse to read a book out loud to me, and usually, the sound of the reading will put me into a deep sleep. Struggling with insomnia, the King requested the records of his reign to be brought in and read to him. Perhaps he thought listening to the monotonous details of his day would allow him to drift into a peaceful sleep.

However, his attendants began reading about the day Mordecai had uncovered the conspiracy to assassinate him. Through this riveting account, the King learned how Mordecai had exposed the King's officers who had been plotting his murder. While listening to the chronicles of his life, he also discovered he had done nothing to honor Mordecai for his loyalty. It was now morning, and the King had not yet slept. Ironically, at this exact moment of learning what Mordecai had done, Haman arrived in the King's court ready to bring his request to impale Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.

Knowing nothing of Haman's plot and feeling compelled to do something for Mordecai, the King asked Haman his advice on what to do "for the man the King delights to honor?" Foolishly, Haman assumed the King wanted to honor him, so he made a long list of extravagant suggestions. When Haman finally finished, the King asked Haman to do all these things to honor Mordecai.

God's timing was perfect. Of the thousands of pages the attendants could have read to the King that night, they happened to choose the one concerning Mordecai. If Haman had arrived on the scene just a few moments earlier, the King would not have known what Mordecai had done for him, and Haman would have had him executed. God, in His mercy, highlighted Mordecai's good deeds, exposed Haman's true character, and brought justice to Mordecai.
