Separate Your Calling From the DetailsSample

Separate Your Calling From the Details

DAY 1 OF 3

The Calling Drives the Details

Let's begin by looking at what Jesus' calling was. Luke 4:18 says,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

This was Jesus' calling. However, what you notice in scripture is that Jesus implemented that calling in different ways. We see a way here in Matthew 4:23, it says,

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Now Jesus wasn't called to go to Galilee. He was called and anointed to preach the Gospel to the poor, to heal the sick, preach deliverance, recover sight to the blind, set liberty to the bruised; that was what he was called to do.

Him going throughout all of Galilee and teaching in synagogues was just the details of how he implemented his calling. Sometimes you'll see him preaching on a boat. Sometimes you see him on a mountain. Sometimes you see him in somebody's house. So those were the details of how Jesus actually implemented his calling.

Here is one more example. Let's look at Paul. Paul was called to be an apostle. Romans 1:1 says,

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called an apostle, separated unto the Gospel of God.

That's what he was called to do - be an apostle. The details were that he went from city to city starting churches. For example, he went to Rome, but he wasn't necessarily called to go to Rome. He was called to be an apostle. To go into Rome or preach to the different Gentile nations, those were the details of the calling.

The calling was driving the details. The details were not driving the calling.
