SWHW Bible Reading Plan: July 2021

DAY 4 OF 22

Top Takeaway from Jess Hatton:

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

When was the last time you sang a worship song that involved the Holy Spirit or the last time you prayed specifically to the Spirit? We sing or even pray to our Father or Jesus, but it’s rare to pray or sing to the Spirit.

Admittedly, I can name only a handful of songs that speak to the person of the Holy Spirit, and with the exception of one or two, most tend to be older hymns or creeds that have been remade. I bring up worship music only to illustrate the fact that the modern church seems to underrepresent the person of the Spirit in the Holy Trinity.

If we are not careful, I fear we will become a church that understands the gospel of Jesus Christ, but one that relies on our own efforts instead of the Spirit.

Jesus told his followers another was coming, a Helper.  The Holy Spirit would be for their advantage and would convict them, teach them, and help them remember what Jesus first taught them. Even though Jesus is no longer with us physically, we have the present and indwelling Spirit.

It is only by the power of the Spirit that others will see the gospel through us. Walking in the Spirit is the very opposite of the flesh, and will help us avoid sins and enable us to walk a life filled with fruit and service for one another (Gal. 5:22).

I want to live my life in a way that I daily submit to the power and work of the Holy Spirit to live out my Christian life because if I tried to live it by my own power, the world wouldn’t see a difference.

Holy Spirit, thank You for Your conviction and the power You provide to help us walk a life that is opposite from the flesh. I pray You would empower us today to behave like Christ in all situations and we would be a witness to others because of the supernatural power of the Spirit found in us. Amen.
