Luke: Exploring the Life of Jesus

DAY 4 OF 10

DAY IV // EXTRAVAGANT WORSHIP, AMAZING FORGIVENESS

Have you ever been to a really nice restaurant—one where you had to get dressed up and you got to eat food that was really pricy? When you go to a restaurant like that there are certain expectations you would usually have as to what the dining experience will be like: from the way you expect people to behave, to the type of service you would receive, to the quality of food that you would be served.

In our passage today, we see Jesus going for dinner at the home of a Pharisee named Simon. Pharisees were known for being extremely religious and very careful to follow the Jewish laws. As Jesus reclined at the table, an unexpected event takes place as a woman who had “lived a sinful life” crashes the dinner party. The Pharisee was understandably shocked; this was surely not what he had expected from the evening. As surprising as what this woman did would have been, what was perhaps even more shocking to Simon the Pharisee was the way that Jesus responded to the situation. This would be a meal he would not soon forget!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Q1 //  Why would the Pharisee have been shocked to see this woman come to Jesus like this?

Q2 //  What is Jesus trying to help the Pharisee to understand from the story he tells in verse 41-42?

Q3 //  What was it about what the woman did that touched Jesus’s heart?

Q4 //  What is surprising about how Jesus responded and what does this mean for our lives?

For Next Time: Read Luke Chapter 10-12.
