Gladness for Mourning: Hope in the Midst of Loss

DAY 3 OF 5

DAY 3: Hope in Lost Treasures

Steve worked for a world-renowned entertainment company for over 20 years. He had a retirement plan in place but needed another seven years to get there. And then he got laid off due to COVID-19.

The company, which had been so solid and dependable since the 1920s, was floundering in the wake of the quarantine shutdown and subsequent distancing requirements. Steve found himself unemployed and doing odd jobs to survive.

His plan was lost. But not his hope.

Steve now volunteers with the hours he has open. He’s found fulfillment in investing his talents for Christ’s Kingdom and, although he’s had to make lifestyle adjustments, God is providing for his family’s needs.

Kat had years of seniority with her airline and was easily filling a full flight schedule. About 10 years ago, her pension was significantly cut. But because she was still working full time, she felt confident about the future. Then the pandemic halted air travel.

Now flights are limited and often have few passengers. She struggles to fill her schedule and is wondering how to move forward. She’s not even sure how long she’ll get to continue to fly.

Kat lost her job security. But not her hope.

Kat has been able to be an encourager to those who are shut-in, overwhelmed and hurting. She gives her time to share Jesus’ love and it’s paid back dividends a pension never could.

What have you lost financially?

Jesus came to this earth poor, grew up modestly as a carpenter and then He lived through the generosity of others during His full-time ministry. He didn’t have a home or even a bed. Yet He was rich beyond measure.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells His disciples to store up “treasures in heaven” that can’t be destroyed or taken away. Whether you’re sharing the Good News of Jesus or bringing someone a meal, treasures are created in Heaven when you serve for eternal purposes.

And focusing on eternal treasure becomes what makes your heart happy.

Notice that nowhere in the Gospels does it say that Jesus went hungry, aside from when He was tempted in the wilderness (Matt. 4:1-22, Luke 4:1-13). God provided for His basic needs and He can do the same for you. Whatever earthly extras you might lose here don’t compare to what awaits you in Heaven!

Points to ponder:

  • What are some of your favorite things? How would you feel if they were lost?

  • Is there someone you know that needs practical help for basic life necessities? Even the smallest display of generosity can lift a spirit.
