Correcting our Impressions


How often do we intentionally allow people a chance to directly address our stereotypes of them? The ancient writers who comprise the book of Proverbs remind us that in a dispute we are often swayed by a particular opinion until “someone comes forward and cross-examines” (18:17 NIV). 


A crucial step in addressing negative stereotypes is giving people the opportunity to cross-examine or challenge our impressions. This process is called perception-checking, where we tell a person the impression we have of them or their group and allow them to respond. 


When was the last time you corrected or altered a negative impression of a person or group after you heard their perspective? How many misunderstandings could be avoided by informing others of our perception of them and inviting clarification?
