After Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel of honor, it was clear that Alexander didn’t have long to live. Throughout the final hours of Hamilton’s life, as he lay dying in his friend’s bed, his wife and friends surrounded him. Alexander encouraged Eliza with a phrase he hoped would help her through her grief. He repeated to his wife, again and again, the words, “Remember, my Eliza, you are a Christian.” He believed this central truth would enable her to regain a sense of hope in the midst of crushing loss. 

In our own struggle facing death, both physical death and the thousands of deaths we face in our everyday lives, Hamilton’s phrase offers us remarkable wisdom and perspective. It reminds us that we believe in something more powerful than death. 

Remember, you are a Christian. 

Remember, you believe that death will not have the final word. Remember, you believe in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—a resurrection we will all experience one day. Remember, you believe that this world is temporary, that death is not the end, but the beginning of life eternal. Remember, you believe that one day, God will destroy death once and for all and create a new heaven and a new earth. He will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. Remember, you believe that the old order of things will pass away, and that Jesus will make all things new.
