Find Freedom From the Draw of Food: Renew Your Mind for Lasting Change

DAY 5 OF 7

Deprive Food Of Its Power

High places make us feel small and insignificant in comparison and they steal our focus from what is most important. God wants to have first place in our lives. In fact, He created us to have a relationship with Him; to talk to Him; to come to Him with our daily struggles and to rely on Him as our source of joy and peace.

God wants to be the only one who holds the highest place in our hearts and minds. When the children of Israel were poised to go into the Promised Land, God commanded them to destroy all idols and high places. However, the Israelites failed to obey his commands. Instead, they went in and mixed it up with the people and practices of the land. Then, a string of kings continued to disobey God’s command to take them down. As a result, these high places, continued to lure the people away from God and His purposes.

What happens when food becomes so important to us that it’s all we can really think about? What happens when we look to food to sooth us when we’re hurting or when we rely on food to make us happy or entertain us? Essentially, we can easily elevate food to such a point that it alone receives our full attention and our maximum loyalty. Our behavior always follows our beliefs, so if we look to food to soothe us and make us happy, then essentially it has our allegiance.

If food is calling the shots in your life, then it’s time to deprive food of its power. How do you do that? You have to begin looking at food not in mere physical terms, but as a spiritual obstacle or stronghold. Only then, can you access the full complement of your spiritual weapons.
