Setting Godly Goals

DAY 2 OF 7

Two words summarize John’s instructions to the crowds: Be generous.

Let’s be honest: In the work world, it’s more common practice to grab for all you can. And generosity is often more of a publicity stunt than a sacrifice.

Here’s the reality: if we don’t make generosity a priority as we set goals, we will likely default to greed, which typically looks like a journey toward more, which never ends up feeling like it’s enough.

I love the imagery in Proverbs 31:20 of the virtuous woman prioritizing generosity in her life:

“She extends her hands to the poor, and she stretches out her hands to the needy.”

Extending implies that she’s using her full reach toward a particular purpose. Stretching means she is giving beyond what is comfortable. And the fact that both times, this verse uses the plural of “hands” vs. “hand” shows us she’s not just giving a little; she’s giving with all she’s got.

The purpose of setting goals is growth, right? So if generosity stretches us beyond our normal capacity, generosity and godly growth go hand-in-hand.

In what ways could you increase your generosity this year? Take a few minutes and brainstorm how generosity could be part of your plan, rather than an afterthought.

God, there’s no question that You are a generous God. Everything we have belongs to You, and You have merely entrusted it to us. From our talents to our possessions and even life itself, Lord; they are all gifts from You. Help us to reflect Your character to those around us by the way we give freely and live with open hands and open hearts. We trust You. Amen.
