The Nudges

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. ISAIAH 11:2

As moms, we are often the ones watching out for our kids, planning their activities, and making sure each day runs smoothly. Sometimes, when we’re in the middle of something—or even out of the blue—we get a nudge. You know the ones—those urges to “go over there” or “say this,” and you feel a little unsettled in your soul until you finally give in and do what you knew you should have in the first place. It’s important to listen to those nudges because they could be more than just your mama instincts telling you to: Go check on your son . . . Make sure to check the lock on the back door . . . Go tell your daughter how much you love her . . . Mama, we’re not going through life alone. Before Jesus died on the cross, He said He was going to leave us with a Helper, the Holy Spirit, who would come from the Father and reveal the truth about God (John 15:26). The Holy Spirit is there to guide us and help us along the way. God knows what our kids need even when our minds are on other things—things that we may think are more important at the time . . . I can’t tell you how many times my children have benefited from me acting on a nudge; and who knows how many times God has saved us from the unseen because I listened to the Helper as He gently pointed me in the right direction. We can often be busy and dismiss a nudge, but God is walking beside us in our journey in motherhood. He is for us, and He is for our kids! Sometimes He may even send an “off” feeling, or something causes us to say no to something our kid wants to do . . . Stick to what you know is best for your children. We’re here to guide them, but the best news is that God is guiding us, so we can make those tough decisions knowing they are the right ones.

Mama, be ready when God says, “Move,” “Go,” or “Do.” Even in those nudges, sometimes it can take a while for action to happen. For me, sometimes a seed is planted within me, and I don’t see what God has been growing until a few years down the road. But during the journey, you just have to keep saying yes to that next step. Mama, I know you can—you were made for this!
