How to Deal With Jealousy in a Christian Marriage

DAY 4 OF 5

Overcoming Jealousy

Are you battling with a feeling of jealousy? Maybe you are saying: “I know I should not be this way, but I often find myself feeling this way. What can I do about it?”

We need to identify sinful jealousy for what it is. We need to acknowledge it. We need to confess it, repent from it, and forsake it. Most importantly, we need to put our trust in the Lord to help us with all of this.

There are a few things we can ask ourselves in order to overcome sinful jealousy:

- Are these Biblical attitudes that I am having?
- Is this (what I am doing/feeling) right?
- Is this a sin that needs to be confessed and forsaken?
- Am I trusting the Lord with these feelings?
- Am I experiencing fear due to my misplaced emphasis and lack of trust in God?

To deal with and overcome sinful jealousy, we need to start trusting in the Lord, not making an idol out of the person we are married to. We also need to understand forgiveness properly. God’s forgiveness does not save us from all the aftermath of our sin. So, whether the issue lies with us or our spouse, it is still about forgiveness. Forgiveness must be understood and either accepted or extended.

If we need to forgive our spouse for failing, there will always be a part of us desiring to take revenge. But if we can truly learn to extend forgiveness, we will be able to overcome these feelings of jealousy and fear by putting our trust in the Lord. We can also show forgiveness by choosing to love, and in humility serving our spouse before we expect them to serve us. Like the Bible tells us, we are to count others as more important than ourselves.

Are you willing to do all of this in order to overcome sinful jealousy? Can you put your trust in God and believe He will help you? Is God enthroned in your life, or is your emphasis misplaced?
