Fighting FOMO

DAY 8 OF 14

FOMO: Drugs/The High You might be thinking, “I don’t really struggle with drugs or substance abuse. This one isn’t really for me.” And maybe it’s not, but often drug use begins with wanting to either fit in or feel good. Striving toward someone or something other than Jesus will lead us to do things we thought we would never do. And soon we’ll develop patterns that will be hard to quit. Suddenly, before we know it, we’re addicted. The problem with addiction is the lie attached to it—that Jesus is not enough. Addiction tells us that something other than our relationship with God can provide the satisfaction we’re looking for. We start giving our time and attention to it, start investing in it, maybe even start living for it. And when we start chasing anything besides Jesus—whether it’s a feeling or a friend group— we’ll find ourselves frustrated and unsatisfied. “The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble” (Proverbs 19:23). The love God has for us is more lasting than any high a drug could offer. We can be confident in Him and content in who He made us to be. Realizing how Jesus sees us and loves us leads to a life of happiness and freedom. When we live in God’s freedom, we no longer have to live in bondage to whatever addiction we’re trying to quench. He sees us and accepts us just the way we are. Now what? Check yourself: What are things in your life you chase besides Jesus?
