Matthew 27:1-14
Matthew 27:1-14 American Standard Version (ASV)
Now when morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pilate the governor. Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it. And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potterâs field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was priced, whom certain of the children of Israel did price; and they gave them for the potterâs field, as the Lord appointed me. Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then saith Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he gave him no answer, not even to one word: insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
Matthew 27:1-14 The Message (MSG)
In the first light of dawn, all the high priests and religious leaders met and put the finishing touches on their plot to kill Jesus. Then they tied him up and paraded him to Pilate, the governor. Judas, the one who betrayed him, realized that Jesus was doomed. Overcome with remorse, he gave back the thirty silver coins to the high priests, saying, âIâve sinned. Iâve betrayed an innocent man.â They said, âWhat do we care? Thatâs your problem!â Judas threw the silver coins into the Temple and left. Then he went out and hung himself. The high priests picked up the silver pieces, but then didnât know what to do with them. âIt wouldnât be right to give thisâa payment for murder!âas an offering in the Temple.â They decided to get rid of it by buying the âPotterâs Fieldâ and use it as a burial place for the homeless. Thatâs how the field got called âMurder Meadow,â a name that has stuck to this day. Then Jeremiahâs words became history: They took the thirty silver pieces, The price of the one priced by some sons of Israel, And they purchased the potterâs field. And so they unwittingly followed the divine instructions to the letter. Jesus was placed before the governor, who questioned him: âAre you the âKing of the Jewsâ?â Jesus said, âIf you say so.â But when the accusations rained down hot and heavy from the high priests and religious leaders, he said nothing. Pilate asked him, âDo you hear that long list of accusations? Arenât you going to say something?â Jesus kept silenceânot a word from his mouth. The governor was impressed, really impressed.
Matthew 27:1-14 King James Version (KJV)
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: and when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
Matthew 27:1-14 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor. Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, âI have sinned by betraying innocent blood.â But they said, âWhat is that to us? See to that yourself!â And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, âIt is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.â And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potterâs Field as a burial place for strangers. For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: âAND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTERâS FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME.â Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, âAre You the King of the Jews?â And Jesus said to him, âIt is as you say.â And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. Then Pilate *said to Him, âDo You not hear how many things they testify against You?â And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.
Matthew 27:1-14 New Century Version (NCV)
Early the next morning, all the leading priests and elders of the people decided that Jesus should die. They tied him, led him away, and turned him over to Pilate, the governor. Judas, the one who had given Jesus to his enemies, saw that they had decided to kill Jesus. Then he was very sorry for what he had done. So he took the thirty silver coins back to the priests and the leaders, saying, âI sinned; I handed over to you an innocent man.â The leaders answered, âWhat is that to us? Thatâs your problem, not ours.â So Judas threw the money into the Temple. Then he went off and hanged himself. The leading priests picked up the silver coins in the Temple and said, âOur law does not allow us to keep this money with the Temple money, because it has paid for a manâs death.â So they decided to use the coins to buy Potterâs Field as a place to bury strangers who died in Jerusalem. That is why that field is still called the Field of Blood. So what Jeremiah the prophet had said came true: âThey took thirty silver coins. That is how little the Israelites thought he was worth. They used those thirty silver coins to buy the potterâs field, as the Lord commanded me.â Jesus stood before Pilate the governor, and Pilate asked him, âAre you the king of the Jews?â Jesus answered, âThose are your words.â When the leading priests and the elders accused Jesus, he said nothing. So Pilate said to Jesus, âDonât you hear them accusing you of all these things?â But Jesus said nothing in answer to Pilate, and Pilate was very surprised at this.
Matthew 27:1-14 New International Version (NIV)
Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. âI have sinned,â he said, âfor I have betrayed innocent blood.â âWhat is that to us?â they replied. âThatâs your responsibility.â So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins and said, âIt is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.â So they decided to use the money to buy the potterâs field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: âThey took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potterâs field, as the Lord commanded me.â Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, âAre you the king of the Jews?â âYou have said so,â Jesus replied. When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, âDonât you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?â But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single chargeâto the great amazement of the governor.
Matthew 27:1-14 New King James Version (NKJV)
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, âI have sinned by betraying innocent blood.â And they said, âWhat is that to us? You see to it!â Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, âIt is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.â And they consulted together and bought with them the potterâs field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, âAnd they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potterâs field, as the LORD directed me.â Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, âAre You the King of the Jews?â Jesus said to him, âIt is as you say.â And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then Pilate said to Him, âDo You not hear how many things they testify against You?â But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Matthew 27:1-14 Amplified Bible (AMP)
When it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) conferred together against Jesus, [plotting how] to put Him to death [since under Roman rule they had no power to execute anyone]; so they bound Him, and led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the governor [of Judea, who had the authority to condemn prisoners to death]. When Judas, His betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was gripped with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, [Ex 21:32] saying, âI have sinned by betraying innocent blood.â They replied, âWhat is that to us? See to that yourself!â And throwing the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary, he left; and went away and hanged himself. The chief priests, picking up the pieces of silver, said, âIt is not lawful to put these in the treasury [of the temple], because it is the price of blood.â So after consultation they used the money to buy the Potterâs Field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore that piece of ground has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet were fulfilled: âAND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF HIM ON WHOM A PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; [Jer 18:1, 2; 19:1-15; 32:6-9] AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTERâS FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME.â [Zech 11:13] Now Jesus stood before [Pilate] the governor, and the governor asked Him, âAre you the King of the Jews?â [In affirmation] Jesus said to him, âIt is as you say.â [Mark 15:2-5; Luke 23:2, 3; John 18:29-37] But when the charges were brought against Him by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. [Is 53:7] Then Pilate said to Him, âDo You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?â But Jesus did not reply to him, not even to a single accusation, so that the governor was greatly astonished.
Matthew 27:1-14 New Living Translation (NLT)
Very early in the morning the leading priests and the elders of the people met again to lay plans for putting Jesus to death. Then they bound him, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and the elders. âI have sinned,â he declared, âfor I have betrayed an innocent man.â âWhat do we care?â they retorted. âThatâs your problem.â Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself. The leading priests picked up the coins. âIt wouldnât be right to put this money in the Temple treasury,â they said, âsince it was payment for murder.â After some discussion they finally decided to buy the potterâs field, and they made it into a cemetery for foreigners. That is why the field is still called the Field of Blood. This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says, âThey took the thirty pieces of silverâ the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel, and purchased the potterâs field, as the LORD directed.â Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. âAre you the king of the Jews?â the governor asked him. Jesus replied, âYou have said it.â But when the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent. âDonât you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?â Pilate demanded. But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governorâs surprise.
Matthew 27:1-14 The Passion Translation (TPT)
Before dawn that morning, all the chief priests and religious leaders resolved to take action against Jesus and decided that he should be executed. So they bound him and led him away to Pilate, the Roman governor. Now, when Judas, the betrayer, saw that Jesus had been sentenced to death, remorse filled his heart. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and religious leaders, saying, âI have sinned by betraying an innocent man.â They replied, âWhy are you bothering us? Thatâs your problem.â Then Judas flung the silver coins inside the temple and went out and hanged himself. The chief priests, picking up the pieces of silver, said, âWe canât keep this, for itâs unlawful to put blood money into the temple treasury.â So after some deliberation, they decided to purchase the potterâs field of clay, to use as a cemetery for burying strangers. Thatâs why that land has been called âThe Field of Blood.â This fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah: They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel, the price of a precious man, And they bought the potterâs field, as the Lord directed. As Jesus stood in front of the Roman governor, Pilate asked him, âSo, you are the king of the Jews?â Jesus answered, âYou have just spoken it.â Then he was accused by the chief priests and religious leaders, but he remained silent. Pilate said, âDonât you hear these allegations?â But Jesus offered no defense to any of the charges, much to the great astonishment of Pilate.
